Películas de la Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP) con tema mexicano (1912)

La Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP) fue una compañía cinematográfica fundada en 1909 por Carl Laemmle, y se localizaba en la esquina de la calle 53 y la Onceava Avenida en Nueva York, además de tener oficinas en Fort Lee, Nueva Jersey. Finalmente fue absorbida por la Universal.

Aparte de la Corrida de toros en Nuevo Laredo que filmó y promocionó en su revista, la IMP también produjo, al menos, tres películas con temática mexicana: The Dove and the Serpent (La paloma y la serpiente), Rescued by Wireless (Rescada por telégrafo) y The Land of Promise (La tierra prometida). Las tres cintas filmadas en 1912 a razón de una por mes: marzo, abril y mayo respectivamente. La publicidad para estas cintas fue publicada en la revista de la compañía, The Implet. Del primer film, el anuncio menciona que es un drama mexicano donde la «paloma», después de un falso amor logra encontrar uno verdadero y lo más probable es que el «hombre digno de su amor» sea un gringo. En la segunda cinta, la damisela entrampada en la revolución mexicana es salvada por el telegrama que manda su amante; igual, no lo dudo, el amante pertenece al país vecino. En la tercera película, resulta hasta infantil preguntar dónde esta la tierra prometida: Estados Unidos. Y es al sur de California al que una joven pareja de mexicanos emigra y, después de ser acusados de abigeos, logran obtener empleo y satisfación en su nuevo entorno.

The Land of Promise

A diferencia de la Corrida de toros en Nuevo Laredo que mereció un par de notas, las cintas con temática mexicana no tuvieron esa notoriedad y salvo una limitada ficha filmográfica, la revista corporativa no publicó mayor información.

La publicación que sí publicó una reseña de la cinta fue The Moving Picture World del 6 de abril de 1912 (Vol. XII, No. 1, p. 49):

Tortola was a dove and Luis was a serpent. She, with her father, the old señor, led an ideal life- until Luis entered
the home. Her heart went out to him because he was handsome and persuasive. But it was not long before she discovered that the serpent, true to his imputed origin, was
treacherous.
He fell in love, after tiring of his dove, with a picturesque girl, who belonged to anybody who would flatter her and gratify her whims for display and gaiety. So the poor little dove went back home, whither she was followed by the serpent, but it was too late. The fond and true lover, who had been in the background all through, claimed the wounded heart. A happy marriage, therefore, came to reward the trusting Tortola.
The story is laid amidst the still pictureque life in modern
Mexico, and illustrates the passionate life led by the Latins
in their love affairs. Tortola is played by Margarita Fischer,
and Harry Pollard is the lover who is finally successful in
winning over the dove to peace and happiness. Edward
Lyons is the’ serpent. Release date is April 4.
